fault install

This picture demonstrates the problem of mixing batches of artificial grass, or joining the grass in different directions. This and the other picture were taken by one of our fitters when called in to assess the installation, fitted by another artificial grass company. It clearly demonstrates the importance of using trained and experienced fitting teams and quality products.

The client requested the installing company to rectify the problem but after several attempts failed. The solution with this area would be to have used a medium-long pile artificial grass, in filled with sand or sand/rubber mix. If you look carefully to the back of the photo you can clearly see ripples caused by the grass not being sand filled, therefore causing it to lift and not follow the sub base below.

It is also important to ensure the pile is leaning in the same direction when joining artificial grass, we would always recommend placing both pieces together then walking around it, this will ensure it looks perfect from all directions. It is also important to check batch numbers ensuring a perfect join.

bad cutting

This picture shows a shoddy finish. Folding artificial grass over timber battens causes the pile to open up leaving ugly edges. Overtime this can also cut through the backing of the artificial grass, causing more problems in the future.

Folding over timber will also cause a problem if the sub-base settles leaving high ridges on the perimeter, this will result in water settling in areas.

Also poor cutting skills are shown here e.g. cutting into awkward areas around the steps. The best solution for this kind of area is to either build a brick or timber frame around the step following the contour of the ground, using the brick or timber to hide the edge of the artificial grass. Alternatively when preparing the groundwork reduce the step height making new contours that are shallow enough for the grass to flow away from each step.

tree

This picture illustrates more ripples on areas that although are steep, are flat and smooth. This is caused due to the grass having no weight holding it in place and can be resolved by using a sand or rubber filled artificial grass.

The picture also shows the incorrect fitting around the tree. As the soil around the tree has no support, it will overtime erode and cause the grass to sag. This can be resolved by installing either a brick or timber surround; this will hold the soil above in place whilst giving you a place to finish the grass up to. We could also use a large diameter plastic drainage pipe or plastic plant container with the base removed, this is great as it can be fitted quickly and cut to the perfect shape.

Also folding artificial grass into the surround looks ugly and unnatural.

lawn

Using a non sand filled grass product can cause problems as the weight of the artificial grass alone is not enough to ensure that it is held in place. The benefits of using sand filled products are that it lays flat with no ripples or creases following the natural contours of your garden.

Once installed a sand filled grass also provides added protection against damage from cigarettes and accidents with barbeques, due to the natural flame retardant action of the sand. Our range of lawn grass meet BS4790 low radius, this is the standard that all floors in public buildings have to meet.

One myth about sand and rubber filled artificial grass is that it will be carried into your house; this is not the case if installed correctly. Once installed the sand and rubber only make up 50-70% of the pile height, ensuring that foot traffic comes in very little contact with it. This year our Lazy grass which is sand filled was used in the Big Brother garden. Contestants were walking in and out of the house from the garden and pool area with wet feet causing no problems with sand in the house or pool. The producers were so pleased with the reduced maintenance, including less garden debris in the pool and house it is to be used again in 2008.
