Artificial Grass Buying Guide

Artificial Turf has come a long way since it was first introduced back in the 1970's. Over the last 10 years in particular we have seen amazing advances in the look and feel of synthetic grass for landscaping use. If you are considering an artificial lawn we have compiled a short helpful guide below to assist you in selecting the right product for your project.

Choose the correct Artificial Grass with Evergreens UK

Colour

Artificial lawns have been a modern revolution in the UK and the market is still in its growth period. There are many different artificial grass products in the marketplace, but many are simply imported and are not designed specifically for the UK market, thus they can often be too dark or appear wahsed out.

To achieve the most natural looking lawn the trick is to select a product like our Lazy Supreme V2 or Wonder Yarn, that combine the fresh green look of British grass with a dynamic dual colour thatch layer adding greater depth to the look of your lawn.

Wastage Factors

Synthetic grass is produced on 2m and 4m widths. When measuring your lawn or roof terrace, always think about the wastage factors. For example, if you are in the designing stages of your lawn, try to keep one of the dimesions an even number and this will limit any wastage factor.

All of our staff have been trained to assist you in this area. If you can send a plan or sketch of the area with measurements taken from both axis at 2m intervals, then we can minimise any wastage factor for you.

For further information please see our measuring guide.

Direction

Artificial grass is directional so it is essential when you are installing a lawn to keep all of the rolls running in the same direction. There is a temptation to turn sections to avoid wastage factors, but if the direction is changed this ultimately comprimises the finish and is never recommended.

Quality

In general terms, the look and feel of the product. Ensure the product has a consistent colour and the tufts are well stitched and product is evenly backed.

* Please note in the sample packs, the products may appear to be malting, however this is not the product failing, it is simply where the sample has been cut on an industrial press machine and the tufts at the perimeters have been penetrated, hence they fall out. This will not happen with any product once fitted.

Texture

Texture is also a factor when choosing your synthetic surface. All of our landscaping products use the sofest polyethylene yarn and this is important in domestic gardens where children are using the lawn, where you want to choose the sofest surface possible. That said polypropylene surfaces and polyamide surfaces are commonly installed in school areas and are perfectly safe for children and all offer fantastic durability combined with the ideal pile height and density attributes.

Recently, some artificial grasses have used recycled polyester yarns, but these yarns are still in their development stages and are not as soft as polyethylene yarns. Once fully developed, these yarns will offer more practical attributes as well as the obvious environmental benefits.

Underlay

Roof terraces - Depending on the original roof surface an underlay is generally recommended as this helps to protect the surface. We offer rubber underlay (10 and 18mm) and also a lightweight 25mm recycled foam shockpad. Using an underlay enables you to avoid directly adhering the artificial grass to the roof system to secure the product in position.

If you wish to access the roof at a later date, then this install technique makes it more straightforward and there will be no adhesive residue on the original roof surface. However, not all roof areas require an underlay, and the surface can simply be adhered at the perimeter so even if you do need access, the only compromise is a small residue left by the glue at the perimeters. When installing on a roof garden, balcony or such like you must considor the weight bearing factors. Please call in to speak with one of our technical team to discuss any specific areas you are unsure of.

Nursery and school play areas with play equipment will require an underlay that conforms to critical fall heights. Our LazyPad product offers a fall height of 1.3m when used with our artificial turf range. The foam shockpad will only need to be installed around the equipment and not neccesarily the whole area. A foam underlay is rarely needed if there is no play equipment as it adds an unneccessary cost to the artificial lawn project as using a polyethylene surface (see Texture section above) provides a soft surface ideal for children.

Pile Height

For lawns, a minimum pile height of 30mm is recommended. Anything shorter and this can sacrifice the natural look you are striving for. We offer a number of landscaping prodcuts between 20-40mm, with a 40mm product like our Lazy Supreme V2 offering the sofest and most lush looking finish.

For terraces, a dense product should be selected, between 14mm - 35mm is generally recommended. If you are using the roof space as a lawn then a product such as our Wonder Yarn 26mm or our Lazy Summer 35mm is ideal.

If you are using furniture on the space such as tables and chairs, then a shorter, denser product like our Grass Park range may offer better suitability. You have to also considor the weight bearing factors of the roof, but generally this is not an issue.

Density

This refers to the amount of yarn, the thickness of the yarn and the number of stitches in the product. Generally the heavier the product the more yarn content, hence the product will be more expensive. However, it also depends on the shape of the yarn and colour of the yarn(s) in the product. A shaped yarn and more vibrant coloured yarn is more expensive to produce, so if 2 products are similar in spec (dtex, density, pile height etc), the colour could be the difference. As a company we only supply the highest grade products and only use the highest grade yarns. Find out more about us.

For high traffic areas, the density of the product should be high as this will perform better over a longer period of time. More density is also beneficial for swimming pool surrounds, walk ways, boat decks, artificial putting greens, patios and play areas. On less dense products, the longevity and performance of the product is improved with a sand infill. The sand infill varies between 5kg's p/sqm to 25kg's p/sq depending on the specificiation of the grass.

Sand Infill

Artificial grass is designed to be sand filled. This has numorous benefits and is integral in creating the most real looking lawn. The amount required is dependent on density of the product to be used, i.e. if it is a yarn rich product with a thatch zone, like our Wonder Yarn products, then just 5-8kg's p/sqm is required.

There are some myths about sand infill that should also be clarified;

  1. Sand infill does not cause burns;
  2. Sand infill does not transfer as it specifically dried and thus sits at the bottom of the pile.

In certain scenarios, a sand infill is not required (indoors and around poolside) and when this is the case, the product is adhered 100% to concrete base or similar.

Disadvantages of not sand filling include;

  1. Inferior level of install;
  2. Sacrifices real look;
  3. Dogs could more easily penetrate the tufts and backing;
  4. Warms up moreso in hot weather;
  5. Does not have as high flammibility rating;
  6. Risk of static shocks.

Backing

The industry standard for artificial grass carpet backing is latex. 95% of our products have this backing with only one of our products having a polyurethane backing. A polyurethane backing offers one main additional benefit in very hot countires as it does not expand or contract, where in extreme weather a latex backing can shrink or expand by a small amount (5-10mm's).

Roll Widths and Lengths

Full rolls of fake grass are produced on 2m and 4m widths and usually made to either 20m - 30m lengths. Full rolls are very heavy (400kg's is average for a high quality 4m full roll artificial lawn grass), so unless you require full rolls for your project, it is advised to take advantage of our cut roll service to make the rolls more managable to handle.
