artificial grass lawn

fitting

Before any work is started plan out the area you wish to cover. Check to ensure that any cables or water pipes are below the digging depth.
If your area has turf, hire a turf cutter from your local hire shop, it is possible to remove turf with a spade but takes much longer and often then requires more tidying up. Remove the turf and approx 20mm of soil, and compact the area

Turf Cutter
Tip:- Hire a turf cutter
everedge
The garden shown for this example used Everedge to provide clean shaped edges. The everedge is bent to shape on the soil to ensure the desired shape is achieved. Once the shape is achieved using a piece of wood and hammer, knock the Everedge into the soil leaving approx 3cm showing.

level the ground
The leveling of the ground is the key to a great looking lawn, when the turf has been lifted and compacted it should leave the area fairly level, remove any large stones or bricks etc. Apply 5mm - 1mm Granite or sharp sand if fine granite is not available, at one end of the area and using a straight piece of timber drag back the granite / sand to provide a level smooth area (if using sand this should not be more than 20mm thick). If there are areas that require more than 20mm of sand use hardcore first then add sand to level the imperfection.
For finishing against slab, patios or concrete see the section below
lay the geotex
When the base is compact and ready for the surface, unroll the geo-tex surface to the area this stops weed growth but allow water to drain through. It is a good idea to nail the geo-tex into place as you unroll it to stop wind from lifting it or moving when the grass is rolled over. Trim any waste from the edges and if a join of geo-tex is required overlap each edge and gaffa tape down the join.
cut to shape
Unroll the artificial grass over the area taking care not to move the geo-tex. It is a good idea to start unrolling from the straightest end first as this will help position the grass and require less adjustment. Once the artificial grass is in the correct position trim the artificial grass to the desired shape, this is made easier if Everedge is fitted as it give you a edge to run your knife around. Always use sharpe blades and change the blade every 3-5m.
trim the join
If a join is required butt both surfaces together ensuring the pile is running in the same direction, fold back each side approx 30-40cm along the length of the join. Trim approx 20-30mm from each edge cutting between tufts. Unroll the join tape along the join line on the floor ensuring equal tape on each section. Applyl the adhesive along each edge of the artificial grass backing approx 10mm and 40mm into the back of the surface in two lines. Fold over one side of the artificial grass onto the join tape. Then start to fold over the second side but ensuring no tufts of grass are crushed under the join and keeping the join tight together. One complete it is a good idea to lay planks along the join and weigh down with bags of sand for example. See other fitting sheet for detailed join pictures
sand the surface
Once the adhesive has cured (2-3 hours) sand can be applied to the artificial grass this can be done with a lawn fertilizer spreader or by cutting holes in each bag of sand and evenly spread the sand over the garden. Lazy Grass require around 20-25 kg per sqm. This should be down on the same day as the lawn installation and should be done on a dry day.

great lawns
Lawn stripes can be archived in Lazy Grass by brushing the pile in opposite directions.

Lawn Fitting Example
The example above demonstrates how to finish your artificial grass when fitting upto a concrete pad, slab or tarmac. We recommend you lift all existing turf and bevel the soil around each slab or along the length or of any patio, concrete pad etc, This bevel needs to be the depth of the artificial grass you are using minus 5 - 10mm so at the edge of the slab if using 40mm thick Lazy Grass you would bevel down approx 30-35mm this bevel tapers down from approx 30cm back from the slab this allow for a gentle bevel rather than a steep drop around the edges.
This method give clean looking edges and eliminates the edges of the artificial grass showing, Our Everedge is also a great way of giving your lawn shape or separating the lawn area from boarders and hiding the edge of the grass. EverEdge
